Walter Merricks CBE is a lawyer with extensive experience as a chief executive, chair and board member in public facing institutions. He is currently the chair of Impress, the independent monitor for the press, a non-executive at the Gambling Commission, a service complaint reviewer at the Royal Institute of chartered Surveyors and a Verita associate.
Walter was previously the chair of the trustee board at the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges and the chief ombudsman at the Financial Ombudsman Service. He recently completed five years on the board of Ombudsman Services (the telecoms, energy and property complaints body) and as service complaint reviewer for the Legal Ombudsman.
In his earlier career he followed a varied path in public legal institutions that has given him extensive experience in law, healthcare, regulation, consumer protection, complaints adjudication and public policy fields. After qualifying as a solicitor he ran the UK’s first publicly funded law centre, became a university law lecturer, a legal journalist, then headed the Law Society’s public affairs division.
Recent work Walter has carried out with Verita includes an investigation into the management response to allegations about staff behaviours related to the death of a baby at Bristol Children’s Hospital.
