Walter Merricks CBE is a lawyer with extensive experience as a chief executive, chair and board member in public facing institutions. He is currently the chair of Impress: the independent monitor for the press; member of the Civil Aviation Authority’s Consumer Panel; service complaint reviewer at the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors; and a Verita Senior Associate.
Walter was previously the chair of the trustee board at the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges and the chief ombudsman at the Financial Ombudsman Service. He recently completed six years on the board of the Gambling Commission, and previously served on the board of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority.
Recent work Walter has carried out with Verita includes an investigation into the management response to allegations about staff behaviours related to the death of a baby at Bristol Children’s Hospital.
