Matt Lewsey is a former senior civil servant and specialist in inquiries and investigations. Over more than twenty years in the Civil Service he led or supported the delivery of some of the most high-profile public inquiries of the period. He was Secretary of the Grenfell Tower Inquiry; the lead official on the design and set-up of the UK Covid-19 Inquiry; and Secretary to the Hillsborough Independent Panel. He also established and led the Cabinet Office’s expert inquiries unit, led the Ministry of Defence’s inquiries and inquests team and worked on police accountability issues in the Home Office.
Matt’s most recent Civil Service role was as the Cabinet Office director responsible for leading the development of the Public Office (Accountability) Bill – the “Hillsborough Law”.
Matt now works independently across the public and private sectors on independent investigations, inquiries and wider public accountability issues. His work includes establishing the UK’s most comprehensive public inquiry recommendation tracking website and a public database bringing together public accountability information from across 100+ disparate sources.
