Orthopaedic services Case study: review of othopaedic services provided by an independent treatment centre

Orthopaedic services

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Strategic Health Authority (now part of NHS South Central) commissioned Verita to conduct an independent review of orthopaedic services supplied by an independent treatment centre. The investigation was triggered after a number of patients required early revisions of their hip prostheses. Verita found that the overseas company providing the service had employed a surgeon with limited experience of hip replacement and the type of prostheses used, and as a result had inserted some of the hip prostheses incorrectly.
