John Broughton
John has over 30 years of policing experience in the UK and overseas, with particular expertise in community and neighbourhood policing and race relations. He joined the police force in 1975, rising through the ranks to become assistant chief constable of Essex Police in October 1996. In this post, he was responsible for investigating serious and organised cross border crime, counter terrorism and public order. He also led a number of high-profile investigations, including the death of an African Caribbean man who died in police custody and the emotive investigation into the abduction and murder of a 15-year-old girl. In 2006 he was appointed as the senior assistant commissioner of the Royal St Lucia Police Force, and took over as commissioner in 2007. During the course of his career, he has led numerous national working groups for the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO), including the development of a
memorandum of understanding between the police, NHS and Health and Safety Executive on investigating patient incidents. John has an MA in police studies from Exeter University and is a Fulbright Fellow and a lifetime honorary member of ACPO.
