Stephanie Bown is a highly experienced medico-legal specialist. She is a registered medical practitioner and an accredited mediator with a law degree. Stephanie practised as an NHS doctor for eleven years and is a former senior executive at a medical professional services membership organisation (MPS). She was director of the National Clinical Assessment Service for a year before joining Verita in May 2015.
Stephanie has a deep understanding of the legal and regulatory framework applying to healthcare combined with political awareness and a thorough, analytical and evidence-based approach to investigations and reviews. Since joining Verita she has conducted a number of systematic investigations and technical reviews. She has designed and delivered a training programme covering informed consent, risk and shared decision making for a maternity unit looking to advance their birthing protocols. She also provides training in systematic incident investigation and the duty of candour to a wide range of audiences with excellent feedback. Her experience includes successfully representing senior clinicians through investigations into their professional practice and handling complex, sensitive and emotionally charged investigations and the ensuing media attention.
