John Rushforth

Senior Associate

John Rushforth is the executive secretary at the Committee of University Chairs (CUC). He is responsible for the Higher Education (HE) Code of Governance, as well as for CUC Practice Notes on Remuneration Committees, Prevent and Academic Governance. He is a member of the Higher Education Standing Committee for Quality across the UK. He is also deputy chair of the South Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group.

John worked in local government, for the Audit Commission and for the Higher Education Funding Council, before retiring from his full-time position as Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Clerk to the Board of Governors at the University of West of England. John was a senior assessor for the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM), and has worked on several projects in collaboration with EFQM and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). These projects included; performance management, innovation management, and knowledge management. He was also a board member of the Council of Management for the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.

John has degrees from Sheffield University and the Open University, and is also a qualified accountant. He has developed and published a wide range of good practice guidance for the English HE sector, including; strategic planning, estates strategy formulation, IT management, risk management, and space management. His work these days mainly focuses on governance-related issues, as well as strategic management reviews.
